Used Ford Probe 2.2L Engine

Ford Probe two-door vehicles used the 2.2L engine from 1988 to 1992. While this build is actually a Mazda F-series motor, the direct partnership with Ford did not affect the sales volume of hatchback cars in the late 1980s. All of the promoted generations of the Probe vehicle included a standard and performance motor. Price data for used Ford Probe 2.2L engine builds is easy to find here at PowertrainGuys.com.

There are different models of the FF and GD platform Probe cars. What used to be known as the EXP was now badged under a new name for the auto industry. There are dual motor blocks that were used to promote more sales of the hatchback class of pre-1990 Ford vehicles. The LX and the GT were two variations of the same car body type. What was different was the compression ratio and horsepower ratings of the motors.

SOHC Standard and Turbo 2.2L

Mazda auto engineering was focused around the 12-valve builds in SOHC designs throughout most of the 20th century. The F2 build in the I4 configuration in the first phase of Probe engineering was the 2.2-liter edition. This was a 110 horsepower edition that was featuring a higher 8:6:1 rate of compression.

The GT trim cars were offered with a much higher performance block. The turbo I4 in the same displacement was improved to 145 horsepower. This meant that a 7:8:1 compression ratio was achieved. This vehicles did make usage of the 5-speed gearboxes that had an overdrive gear.

In the final years of Probe production, Ford started to go back to its 3.0-liter V6 motor. The range of 140 to 145 horsepower on average was achieved for the late 1990s models prior to the actual brand termination. Because Ford-Mazda vehicles are still found in used condition, engines are readily available.
